Self-Education: World Cultures, Part 1

August 19, 2024

Do you long to be a world traveler? Do you get excited thinking about life in distant countries? Then this is the unit for you!

Self-education is a major benefit of homeschooling. Parents often learn alongside their children, but we sometimes want to take it further and dig deeper. That’s where our self-education units come in!

In the World Cultures units, you will explore cultures and people groups around the world while reading a piece of literature from each continent/region.  Every week, you will read an article, watch several videos, cook traditional foods, enjoy beautifully written poetry and literature, and watch movies to help you get immersed in different cultures as you study. Each Self–Education unit will be similarly structured to help you build a routine and stay consistent with your education!

Self-Education: World Cultures, Part 1 will include the continents of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. This unit will take 10 weeks to complete as written; however, as with all of our lesson plans, it is flexible enough to stretch it out over a longer period of time if needed.

Like our levels and unit studies, you will have a spine book as the foundation for your learning. In this course, the spine book is the gorgeous National Geographic People of the World: Cultures and Traditions, Ancestry and Identity. This book is an expansive guide to the clans, tribes, ethnicities, and peoples of the world, organized by continent.

In addition, I’ve included a handful of well-chosen books to enhance your cultural studies. You will also enjoy poetry, articles, videos, and movies. To help you really dig into the reading, I’ve also included journaling prompts. There are various resources and activities to help you fully immerse yourself in your studies!

This parent course pairs well with Level 0 and Level 7!

Every Self-Education unit comes with:

  • a full reading schedule
  • discussion questions
  • copywork taken from the literature
  • links to articles and videos, along with journaling prompts
  • movie and optional book recommendations
  • quizzes to help you check your learning
