Lit Bite: Willodeen

August 12, 2022

Everything is connected, and everyone has something important to bring to the table.  That’s the message of Willodeen by Katherine Applegate.

This story is written almost like a fable, set in a fantasy world very similar to ours, in which humans have thrown nature out of balance through ignorance and monetary gain.

Willodeen is a young girl who loves all creatures, especially Screechers, which everyone else thinks of as pests. Her town depends upon the cute hummingbears that like to nest in the trees. They bring in tourists every year.

Mother nature seems angry lately, and the town’s beloved hummingbears are disappearing. Willodeen and her friend Connor, along with some unexpected magic, will uncover the answers to the mystery.

This Lit Bite takes 3 weeks to complete (as written). While flexible age-wise, I recommend it for ages 7 – 10.

Content warning for parental death and wildfires.

Every Lit Bite comes with:

  • a full reading schedule
  • vocabulary
  • discussion questions
  • copywork and dictation taken from the literature
