Lit Bite: The Campaign

September 17, 2024

“Everybody wanted something, and they were all depending on Janet to help them get it.

And who was I to saythat art class mattered more than the rest of it?”

Politics starts in the community, and The Campaign, by Leila Sales is an excellent way to explain that to children!

Maddie loves art and struggles to fit in with her classmates. When she learns that the candidate for mayor (who is running unopposed) wants to eliminate the arts in public schools, she convinces her babysitter to run against her. This story will take you through the entire process of campaigning for a government office, from start to finish, and show that everyone, even kids, has a part to play in politics!

Topics covered: Political Campaigning and Civics

This Lit Bite takes three weeks to complete (as written). While flexible age-wise, I recommend it for ages 7 – 10.

This Lit Bite pairs well with our Election 2024 Unit Study!

Every Lit Bite comes with:

  • a full reading schedule
  • vocabulary
  • discussion questions
  • copywork and dictation taken from the literature
  • activities and project ideas to help you achieve the best reading experience with your children!
