Narration is a key component to the Build Your Library program. Narration replaces the need for quizzes and tests by asking the child to tell back what they read or listened to in their own words. It’s really quite simple – they read (or listen), then simply tell what happened in the reading. No long lists of discussion questions picking apart minor details of the reading to make sure they were paying attention. You’ll know if they paid attention based on how much they tell you from their reading.

Not all children think and learn in the same way, and it’s important to change things up a bit to keep them interesting. Not every book needs narrating, and if you always ask them to just tell back what they heard with every reading, they will quickly become bored with narration. This is why I created the Narration Cards. I brainstormed lists of ideas and wrote them on index cards. My children LOVED this. It was different, there were silly ideas, like making a puppet show about their favorite scene and prompts to give them different ways of looking at a reading. It made narrating fun and interesting.

When I wrote Build Your Library curriculum, I knew I needed to include these Narration Cards.  There are 3 levels of cards, based on age level. The 6-8 level includes mostly oral and art activities along with a few written. The 8 – 10 level includes more written activities and the 10+ level cards have more advanced activities.  The cards are color coded (6-8 is red, 8 – 10 is blue and 10+ are green), so if you use multiple levels you won’t accidentally mix them up.

Some examples:

6 – 8:

  • Create a puppet show based on the reading.
  • Draw a scene from the reading and include a short caption.
  • Tell 5 things you remember from the reading.

8 – 10:

  • Write a song or poem inspired by the reading.
  • Design a quiz based on the story.
  • Compare and contrast two characters – you can make a Venn Diagram or make a chart. Why are they similar/different?

10+

  • Write a movie script for a scene or event.
  • Choose a character from the story and create a character sketch or map.
  • Make an illustrated timeline.

Note: if you purchase a full year program, it comes with a set of narration cards. Levels 1, 2 and 3 will use the 6-8 level cards. Levels 4-5 use the 8 – 10 level cards and Levels 6 – 8 will use the 10+ cards.  You can purchase an older or younger set if you are including children at multiple levels.
