( Grade 5 – Age 10-12 )
You and your child will begin a journey through American History, using the series A History of Us by Joy Hakim. Discover how the first Americans lived, travel across the Atlantic with Columbus and later the pilgrims on the Mayflower, learn about the Revolutionary War, Lewis and Clark and westward expansion up through the days leading to the Civil War. You will also begin a study of the 50 states, in order of their statehood.
You will enjoy a variety of literature selections together. Journey through Middle Earth with Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit, learn about the many explorers during the height of European exploration in Around the World in A Hundred Years, and solve the mysteries of Peggy’s ancestral home ‘Rest-and-be-Thankful’ in The Sherwood Ring.
You will study American artists and complete a variety of art projects, memorize poetry written by great American poets such as Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson, along with the Preamble to the Constitution, and other historical works.
Your science focus this year will be biology, using Real Science Odyssey Biology 2 along with a selection of well chosen living books
