Summer Read-a-thon Week 1: Summer Activity

June 12, 2013

How is your reading going so far? I hope everyone is enjoying their summer themed reading selections!

There are lots of fun activities that say “summer” to me. You can have a picnic at the park (or in your own back yard!), go outside at dusk and catch fireflies, snack on watermelon or ice cream from the ice cream truck…the possibilities are endless!

One of our personal favorite summer activities is bubble blowing. It’s fun for all ages! Have you ever blown bubbles on the beach when the sand is wet? The bubbles actually stick to the ground and it feels like your walking around in fairyland.

How about making some homemade bubble solution? All you need is:

  • 1/2 cup dishwashing liquid (such as Dawn or Joy)
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 teaspoons sugar (or corn syrup)

Mix together and place in a shallow pan (or refill old bubble containers).  It might be fun to add food coloring for colorful bubbles.

Now you can experiment with a variety of household items to see what makes the best bubble wands! Try pipe cleaners bent into the shape of a bubble wand, cookie cutters, wire coat hangers, etc.  Just dip into the solution and wave them through the air.

Feel free to let me know what bubble wands worked out best for you! I’d love to hear about it.

Happy reading!
